Anne Lister (1791–1840)
Diarist, businesswoman, traveller and
the 'first modern lesbian'
A hugely important figure in both women's history and LGBTQ+ history, Anne Lister was a force of nature: a landowning heiress, a formidable businesswoman, an avid scholar, a thrill-seeking traveller, a gung-ho mountaineer – and a prolific diarist who detailed the minutiae of her lesbian relationships in a secret code of her own devising.
Her intelligence, energy and lust for adventure were boundless; every atom of life fascinated her and every second of it was to be lived, whether through sex, study or scrambling up the Pyrenees.
