ABOUT HOLLY

Holly Kyte is an author of women’s social history, specialising in the forgotten stories and neglected aspects of women’s lives – particularly those who flouted social and gender conventions.

She read Classics and English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and has since worked as an arts journalist and an editor of both fiction and non-fiction. She has written for various newspapers, websites and magazines, and been a literary critic for the Sunday Telegraph and the Times Literary Supplement. What is a Roaring Girl?

‘A Roaring Girl was loud when she should be quiet, disruptive when she should be submissive, sexual when she should be pure, “masculine” when she should be “feminine”. She was everything a woman was not supposed to be, and in a world before feminism, she was society’s worst nightmare.’
